Why do star-nosed moles have such strange noses?

That star-shaped nose is a super-fast touch detector. The fleshy rays around the mole's nose are packed with touch sensors. Underground and underwater, sight is not very useful, so the mole taps the world rapidly to find worms, insects, and safe paths.
