How do leafcutter ants grow food underground?

Leafcutter ants use leaves to feed a fungus farm. The ants do not mostly eat the leaves they carry. They chew them into a soft garden bed for a special fungus. The fungus grows in underground chambers, and the ants feed on parts of it.
