Why do whale sharks have spots?

Whale shark spots may help camouflage them and identify each animal. Seen from above, pale spots can break up the shark's outline in sunlit water. Scientists also use the unique spot pattern like a fingerprint to recognise individuals. The exact benefits are still being studied.
