Why do cassowaries have helmet-shaped crests?

A cassowary's crest may help with sound, display, and forest life. The tall casque on its head is made from a light, tough covering over softer material. Scientists think it may help show age or health, guide low sounds, or protect the bird while moving through dense rainforest.
