Why do asteroids have strange lumpy shapes?

Many asteroids are too small for gravity to pull them round. A planet has enough gravity to squeeze itself into a ball. Small asteroids often do not. Collisions, weak gravity, and piles of broken rock can leave them shaped like potatoes, peanuts, or rubble clumps.
