How can a spacecraft use a planet to speed up?
A spacecraft can borrow a little motion from a moving planet. During a gravity assist, the craft falls toward a planet and curves around it. Because the planet is moving around the Sun, the encounter can change the craft's speed and direction, saving fuel on long missions.
