Why do comets sometimes break apart?

Comets can crack when sunlight warms their icy, dusty bodies. As a comet nears the Sun, frozen gases turn into jets that push through weak spots. Spinning, heating, and tidal pulls from planets can add stress. Some comets split into pieces instead of staying whole.
