Why do spacecraft use heat shields?

Heat shields protect spacecraft from air that becomes fiercely hot. When a spacecraft re-enters an atmosphere, it slams into air at huge speed. The air compresses and heats around it. A heat shield carries heat away, burns off safely, or insulates the craft inside.
