Why do glaciers make U-shaped valleys?

Glaciers carve wide valleys because ice grinds across the whole valley floor. A river usually cuts a narrow V shape. A glacier is a thick river of ice, packed with rock pieces underneath. As it creeps downhill, it scrapes the sides and bottom into a broader U shape.
