Why do caves stay cool in summer?
Caves stay cool because rock changes temperature very slowly. Deep underground, sunlight and hot afternoon air cannot easily reach. The surrounding rock keeps a steadier temperature than the surface. Air moving through cave passages may also be cooled by contact with rock.
