How do landslides start after heavy rain?
Heavy rain can make slopes heavier and weaker at the same time. Water soaks into soil and rock cracks, adding weight. It can also reduce friction that holds grains together. If the slope is steep or damaged, gravity may suddenly pull the wet material downhill.
