Why do beaches have different coloured sand?

Sand colour depends on the rocks, shells, and minerals nearby. White sand may come from coral or shells. Black sand can come from volcanic rock. Pink or green sands contain special minerals or shell pieces. Waves grind local materials into grains, giving each beach its colour.
