Why do some soils turn red?
Red soil often gets its colour from iron minerals. When iron in rocks reacts with oxygen and water, it can form rusty-coloured minerals. Warm, wet climates can help this happen quickly. As rock breaks into soil, those iron minerals stain the ground red or orange.
