How do sinkholes grow before they open?
Some sinkholes grow quietly as water dissolves rock underground. Rainwater can become slightly acidic and seep into limestone. Over time it widens cracks and cavities below the surface. If the roof of soil or rock becomes too weak, it suddenly collapses into the hidden space.
