Why does your nose run when you cry?

Your nose runs during crying because extra tears drain into it. Tears do not only spill over your eyelids. Small drainage openings near the inner corners of your eyes lead into passages connected to the nose. When you cry hard, extra tear fluid flows that way and mixes with nose mucus.
