Why do cuts itch as they heal?

Healing skin can itch because nerves and new tissue are busy. As a cut repairs, immune cells clean the area and skin cells grow across the gap. Dry scabs, stretching skin, and chemical signals can tickle nearby nerves. Itching can be annoying, but scratching may reopen the wound.
