Why do swimming pools smell like chemicals?

The strong pool smell often comes from chlorine reacting with sweat and dirt. Clean pool water has disinfectant to kill germs. When chlorine reacts with body oils, sweat, or urine, it forms chloramines, which make the sharp smell. Good pool care controls both germs and those smelly reactions.
