Why do scissors cut better near the hinge?

Because the blades near a pair of scissors' hinge have far more cutting leverage. When your hand squeezes the handles, the hinge turns that push into a strong squeeze at the blades. Closer to the hinge, that squeeze is strongest, perfect for thick material, while the tips suit delicate trimming.
