Why do mushrooms pop up after rain?
Because rain gives hidden fungi exactly what they need to grow mushrooms. Most of a fungus lives hidden underground as fine threads. Once the soil turns damp enough, it can quickly push mushrooms up above the surface to release their spores. The mushroom is only the visible part of something much bigger.
