How do peanuts grow underground?
Because peanut flowers bloom above ground, then push their pods down into the soil. After pollination, a stalk called a peg bends downward and buries the developing pod. The peanut seeds finish growing underground, protected from drying out and everyday damage, which is why peanuts are dug up rather than picked.
