Why do ice cubes crack in warm drinks?

Ice cubes crack because the outside warms faster than the inside. When ice hits a warm drink, the outer layer expands and changes temperature quickly. The colder inside changes more slowly. That uneven stress can split the cube with tiny cracking sounds.
