How did people make purple dye from sea snails?

Some ancient purple dye came from tiny amounts of colour inside sea snails. Workers collected certain sea snails and processed a small gland to release colour chemicals. Sunlight and air helped the dye change into deep purple. It took many snails and lots of work, so purple cloth became rare and expensive.
