History & Time
How did ink stay on old parchment?
Ink stayed on parchment by soaking into or gripping the prepared surface. Parchment was made from animal skin scraped and dried smooth. Some inks stained the surface chemically, while others used dark particles held by binders. Careful drying helped the writing last.
