How did windmills grind grain?
Windmills turned moving air into the motion of heavy grinding stones. Wind pushed the sails, spinning a shaft inside the mill. Gears changed that turning motion and drove millstones that crushed grain into flour. The miller adjusted the sails for changing wind.
