Why did old streets have cobblestones?

Cobblestones made muddy roads stronger and easier to drain. Before smooth asphalt, rounded stones could be packed into streets to create a firmer surface for feet, carts, and animals. Gaps let water drain better than plain dirt, though the ride was bumpy.
