Why do axolotls keep feathery gills as adults?
Axolotls keep young features because their bodies do not fully switch to land life. Many salamanders lose external gills as they mature. Axolotls usually stay aquatic, keeping feathery gills for breathing in water. Their development follows a different path, which helps them live their whole lives in lakes.
