Why do cliffs have stripes?

Cliff stripes often show different layers of rock or sediment. Each layer may have formed at a different time, from mud, sand, lava, ash, or shells. Erosion cuts into the cliff and reveals the stack. Colour changes can come from minerals or grain size.
