Why do volcanoes make black sand?
Black volcanic sand comes from dark lava rock broken into grains. When lava cools into basalt, it is often dark because of iron-rich minerals. Waves, explosions, or weathering break the rock into tiny pieces. Those grains can collect as black beaches.
