Why do mountains have tree lines?
Tree lines happen where conditions become too harsh for trees to grow tall. High mountains are colder, windier, and have shorter growing seasons. Soil may be thin, and young trees can dry or freeze. Above the tree line, smaller plants may survive where trees cannot.
