Why do desert rocks get shiny varnish?
Desert varnish forms as minerals slowly coat exposed rock surfaces. Tiny clay particles, iron, and manganese can build up on rocks over long periods. Microbes may help the coating form. Dry desert conditions let the dark, shiny layer remain visible.
