How do lifts stop safely if a cable breaks?

Lifts use safety brakes that grip the guide rails during dangerous movement. Elevator cabins run along metal rails. If the car moves too fast, a governor can trigger wedge-shaped brakes that clamp onto the rails. Modern lifts also have multiple cables and controls to reduce risk.
