Why do museums keep rooms dim?

Museums dim rooms to protect delicate objects from light damage. Light can fade dyes, weaken paper, and damage old fabrics or paintings over time. Lower light levels slow that harm while still letting visitors see. Very sensitive objects may be displayed only for short periods.
