Why do playgrounds use soft ground?

Soft playground ground spreads out the force of a fall. Rubber, mulch, sand, or engineered surfaces compress when a child lands. That makes the stop slower and gentler than concrete would. It cannot prevent every injury, but it reduces the risk from normal tumbles.
