Why do pumpkins have thick skins?

Because a pumpkin's thick skin protects the soft food and seeds inside. A tough rind helps a pumpkin hold onto water, shrug off bumps, and resist pests or microbes. It also lets the pumpkin rest right on the ground while it grows.
