Why do balloons squeak when rubbed?

Balloons squeak when rubber grips and slips in quick bursts. As you rub a balloon, the surface may stick for a split second, stretch, then slip. Those repeated jumps make vibrations, and vibrations make sound. The tight rubber skin makes the sound sharp.
