History & Time
How did people keep ice before freezers?
People stored winter ice in insulated ice houses. Ice was cut from lakes or rivers, packed in sawdust or straw, and kept in thick-walled buildings or underground rooms. Insulation slowed melting, so ice could last into warmer months.
