Why did knights wear chain mail?

Chain mail protected the body while still letting it move. Thousands of small metal rings were linked into a flexible mesh. The rings helped stop cuts from swords or arrows, while the wearer could bend more easily than in solid plates. Padding underneath absorbed impact.
