Why did old maps have sea monsters?

Old maps showed sea monsters partly because unknown seas felt dangerous and mysterious. Mapmakers mixed reports from sailors, real animals, myths, and decoration. Strange creatures warned viewers that waters were uncertain or risky. They also made maps exciting and beautiful objects.
