Why did old ships carry ballast stones?
Ships carried ballast stones to sit lower and steadier in the water. An empty or lightly loaded ship can ride too high and become unstable. Heavy stones placed low in the hull lowered the centre of gravity and improved balance. When cargo was added, ballast could be moved or removed.
