How did early cameras capture an image?

Early cameras used lenses and light-sensitive materials to trap a picture. A lens focused light from a scene onto a prepared plate or film. Chemicals changed where light hit them, creating a hidden image that could be developed. Long exposure times meant people had to sit still.
