Why are manhole covers usually round instead of square?

Round covers are a clever shape because they cannot fall through their own holes. A round manhole cover is the same width no matter how you turn it, so it cannot drop into the circular opening below. A square cover can fit diagonally through a square hole if it is tipped the wrong way, which would be dangerous for workers and traffic.
