Why are fire hydrants so powerful?

Fire hydrants are powerful because they connect firefighters to large pressurised water mains. A hydrant is not a little tank of water. It is a strong valve connected to underground pipes that carry lots of water through a town or city. Those pipes are kept under pressure, and when firefighters open the hydrant, water can rush out fast through thick hoses.
