Why do airports have moving walkways?

Moving walkways help people cross long airport distances without turning every trip into a hike. Airports can be enormous because runways, gates, security areas and baggage systems need lots of space. A moving walkway is a slow conveyor belt for people. It keeps crowds moving along long corridors, helps travellers with bags, and makes tight flight connections less exhausting.
