Why do cities plant trees along busy roads?

Street trees quietly cool, shade, filter and calm the harshest parts of a city. Trees along roads give shade to people and parked cars, and their leaves release water vapour that can cool the air nearby. They can catch some dust and pollution on leaf surfaces, though they cannot magically clean all traffic fumes.
