How do floodgates hold back rising water?
Floodgates block water by turning a river or sea wall into a closable doorway. A floodgate is a strong barrier placed where water might flow into a town, tunnel or low area. When water levels rise, the gate closes against a frame or seal, and the pressure of the water can actually press it tighter.
