How do traffic lights know an ambulance is coming?
Some traffic lights can receive a special signal from emergency vehicles and change to help them pass. Many cities use traffic-signal priority systems. An ambulance, fire engine or police vehicle may send a coded radio, infrared or GPS-based message as it approaches. A receiver or traffic-control computer checks the signal and can turn lights green in the vehicle's direction while stopping cross traffic.
