How do bridges open to let tall ships pass?
Movable bridges use motors, counterweights and hinges to briefly turn a road into a gate. Some bridges are built across waterways where tall boats still need to pass. A bascule bridge lifts one or two leaves upward, often helped by heavy counterweights that balance the span. A swing bridge rotates sideways, and a lift bridge raises a section straight up.
