Why do cities build ponds that are meant to fill during storms?
Storm ponds are empty space saved for water before it floods streets and homes. When heavy rain falls on roofs, roads and car parks, it cannot soak into the ground easily. A stormwater pond, sometimes called a detention basin, gives that water somewhere to collect for a while. The pond releases water slowly into drains or creeks, which reduces sudden flooding downstream.
