Why are aeroplane windows rounded instead of square?

Because a rounded window spreads pressure evenly, instead of bunching it into sharp corners. A plane's cabin is pressurised, so the air inside is always pushing outward on the aircraft. Sharp corners on a square window would concentrate that push, making cracks more likely. Rounded corners spread the stress smoothly all the way around.
