Why are train wheels slightly cone-shaped?

Because cone-shaped wheels quietly help a train steer itself around gentle curves. A train's two wheels are fixed to the same axle, spinning together as one. On a curve, the outer wheel needs to travel a little farther than the inner one, and that clever cone shape helps make up the difference.
